The Volunteer Engagement VISTA will support the Volunteer Engagement team in increasing 826 Valencia’s capacity to serve under-resourced students in San Francisco. The person in this position will: recruit tutors and groups at community events, help plan and coordinate 826’s volunteer application process, support volunteer trainings and orientations, assist with volunteer recognition events, work with a database management system and run volunteer screenings, and help expand and diversify our volunteer base. This entry-level one-year position is a unique opportunity to learn about managing volunteers.


  • Recruit volunteers and groups to support our programs, with focus on diversifying our volunteer force to reflect the backgrounds of our students
  • Support the volunteer engagement process, identifying its strengths and challenges, and make recommendations for streamlining it. Use the database to track engagement of new and existing volunteers
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Volunteer Engagement, assess and update current email templates, sign-up sheets, and communications to volunteers about 826 Valencia’s programs, with appropriate pre-screening information
  • Create a model to engage volunteer leaders (i.e. Ambassadors) as a retention strategy and develop a deeper connection amongst new and returning volunteers
  • Support the Volunteer Engagement team in soliciting in-kind donations for large-scale volunteer events
  • Serve as a representative of 826 at tabling events to recruit potential volunteers
  • Other duties as assigned


  • High School diploma or equivalent, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • Prior work or volunteer experience within an office setting


  • Must be a U.S. citizen, national, or legal permanent resident alien of the United States.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a variety of areas. Flexibility is a must
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability and interest in working with a culturally diverse population and a variety of stakeholders and audiences
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • A passion for education and a strong sense of social justice are essential


  • Fluent written and spoken English
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Some experience using Salesforce
  • Experience coordinating a project or group of volunteers, including recruitment in culturally diverse communities


  • Primarily an office environment
  • Physical requirements include standing, sitting, typing, bending and lifting up to approximately 50 pounds
  • Occasional driving and/or flying to meetings, trainings, and community events
  • Some positions may require a lot of local driving to meetings and community events in personal vehicle

  • Education Award of $5,645 granted upon completion of service and usable for college, trade school, or other educational expenses or a cash stipend of $1,500 upon successful completion of service term

*In 2017-18, the stipend for VISTAs in San Francisco was approximately $22,000 for the year. The 2018-19 stipend will be comparable, and we’ll be announcing the official amount in the coming weeks. Your stipend will be subject to federal, state, and city taxes.
