On May 16, it was our honor to host multi-talented Rashida Jones at our annual Bookeaters’ Bash, the year’s biggest fundraising event, at San Francisco’s St. Regis Hotel. Hosted by celebrated author Daniel Handler, and featuring co-founders Nínive Calegari and Dave Eggers, Executive Director Bita Nazarian, and the soul sounds of Marc & the Casuals, the event raised more than $360,000 to support ongoing 826 programming and expansion into the Tenderloin.
One of our favorite moments was when Rashida, who is currently writing Toy Story 4, and 826 Valencia student Marlon, a regular at our Writing Table, agreed that the third draft was always the best one. Good to know!
A round of applause to our featured students Marlon, Maria, and Emajae for braving the crowd to tell us in their own words the positive impact our work has had on their writing, and in their lives. You can hear more from our students in this video, produced by Leo Ronin.
Special thanks to our Bash sponsors Criterion Capital Management, Hamel Family Wines, Maverick Capital Charities, LOLy, NextDraft, Goldman Sachs, Middle-earth Enterprises, BBDO San Francisco, PG&E, Caruso Affiliated, Miette Patisserie, and Gundlach Bundschu Winery for making this fun evening possible.
