Mission Magazine: The College Issue

Tuesday, May 17th marked the release party for the fourth installment of Mission Magazine. The magazine is a culmination of ideas and beliefs that seniors at Mission High School wanted to share as a guide for future seniors to come. With the help of their teacher, Mr. Velez, and 826 Valencia tutors, students worked hard to write this issue all about the challenges of school, college applications, and personal life.

Over the course of eight weeks classmates interviewed alumni, Mission High School staff, and each other to shed light on their topics. These young writers gained a wealth of research week after week. The articles in Mission Magazine range from SAT prep to the struggles of independent and foster youth during the college application process. Mr. Velez’s class taught us about how to afford college apps, entering college as an international student, and staying motivated when students have a variety of priorities. We are excited to see the knowledge that is being passed from peers onto the next generation of students.

Students celebrated their work by sharing a memory they had while making their contribution to Mission Magazine. Kind words were expressed about the encouragement and inspiration that their tutors from 826 provided. While reflecting on the end of the school year, Mr. Velez told his students that there were more students in his class that were accepted to UC’s than ever before. Many of the students are the first in their family to go to college.

826 Valencia is proud of the students that contributed to Mission Magazine. The diversity of topics within this issue reflects how many different experiences the students at Mission High have to share with next year’s seniors and beyond. Thank you to our young writers for their willingness to share and for giving back to their community! We can’t wait to see what they do next.
