HOURS: 9:00 – 5:30 with evenings and weekends as required

Volunteers and interns are the lifeblood of 826 Valencia. The Director of Volunteer Engagement oversees 826 Valencia’s volunteer and internship programs, leveraging a community of caring adults in the San Francisco Bay Area to provide individualized attention to our students and help them build the confidence, pride, skills, and creativity that will lead to future success. The Director of Volunteer Engagement provides strategic leadership and guidance on research-based, data-driven volunteer engagement practices, and manages the work of the Volunteer Engagement Team in order to ensure inspire people to get involved and make a difference.

The Director of Volunteer Engagement reports to the Executive Director of 826 Valencia and supervises a team of three people.


  • Develop and implement goals and objectives for the volunteer and intern programs which reflect the mission of the organization and meet program demands; measure progress toward these goals on an on-going basis to ensure that all programs are sufficiently staffed and volunteer satisfaction remains high.
  • Recruit, screen, and orient volunteers and interns to sufficiently staff programs, with a focus on diversifying the volunteer base.
  • Work with all staff to use best practices to manage volunteers and interns (including on-boarding, training, celebration, and leadership opportunities) to retain volunteers and maximize effectiveness.
  • Direct and support the work of the Volunteer Engagement Associate and the Volunteer Coordinator in order to: manage and maintain the Salesforce database of volunteer accounts; manage communications; coordinate corporate volunteer opportunities, outreach, and trainings; and coordinate high school volunteers/interns.
  • Oversee all communications for volunteer and intern services, including weekly newsletter and outreach collateral.
  • Develop and direct the volunteer leadership programs, including the Volunteer Engagement and Support Team and the 826 Valencia Ambassador program, to ensure a deeper level of engagement and commitment among exemplary volunteers.
  • Direct opportunities to steward and celebrate volunteers and interns so that they feel appreciated and energized by our work, including planning and executing two 100 Club celebrations.
  • Initiate and steward partnerships with universities, corporations, and other groups to increase our pool of volunteers.


  • Assist with the identification and development of grant opportunities and grant reporting to support the work of the 826 Valencia organization with the Development Director.
  • Partner and collaborate with 826 Valencia Program Evaluation to identify research and evaluation opportunities.
  • Attend staff meetings, meet all deadlines and assist in the evaluation of the program.
    Attend National Conference and other professional development.
  • Update relevant sections of the 826 Valencia website and publication materials.
    Participate as part of the organization’s leadership team in the development and management of the strategic direction for the 826 Valencia organization, and integrate the team’s work to support the organizational vision and mission.
  • Other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director.


  • Excellent command of English language and grammar, both verbal and written, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in volunteer engagement and developing and implementing educational internship programs.
  • Ability to design training programs and provide training to various size groups. Strong facilitation and presentation skills.
  • Ability to work with culturally diverse staff and populations and a variety of education stakeholders and audiences.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships with others, both internally and externally, to achieve the goals of the organization.
  • Ability to monitor, analyze, consult and report on volunteer programs and services.
  • Ability to establish and manage priorities effectively, including high levels of correspondence.
  • Advanced organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks.


Bachelor’s degree in social sciences or business administration or equivalent, MA in nonprofit management preferred.

Minimum of 10 years of experience involving supervision, volunteer and staff development and training, program development and administration to include at least 3 years in management/leadership positions.

Minimum of 3 years of experience in developing partnerships and engaging a diverse group of stakeholders and community members.


Fluent Spanish skills preferred.
Knowledge of Salesforce CRM, MailChimp, WordPress, and InDesign
