First Annual Pirate Store Dip Down

We at the Pirate Supply Store recently produced this beautiful, strange book How to Cook on a Ship. The problem is, the only recipe in the book is for hard tack and, well, we don't know how to make it palatable. In these early years of sea-voyaging, this tough salty cracker is all one eats if you're on a ship. Truly. All that's to say, we're having a competition of dips, salsas, and spreads to make our lives all a little better.

So, whether you're a connoisseur of condiments or dabbling in new dipping delights please enter yourself and your savory spread into this First Annual Dip Down! Judges include but are not limited to: our former crew members Erin Archuleta of Ichi Sushi and Walter Green of Lucky Peach, probably a pirate, and at least one intern.

Categories may or may not include: Best Overall Dip, Audience Favorite, Best at Sticking to the Hard Tack, Best at Masking the Flavor of the Hardtack, Best at Softening the Hardtack...whatever feels right in the moment. Appropriate prizes will be offered.

First ten entries will receive a free copy of How to Cook on a Ship. After the first ten, entrants will receive the book at half price. Everyone gets a high-five from Byron.

  • Bring about 12oz of dip.

  • Tasting begins at 4pm.

  • Judging at 5:30pm.
